Deaf Debate – The UpTake Honored For Debate Captioning

Last year The UpTake captioned a seemingly endless number of Gubernatorial debates so the deaf and hard of hearing could be better informed. Wednesday, the Commission of the Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing Minnesotans honored The UpTake with it’s Accessible News Outlet Media Excellence Award. UpTake Executive Producer Mike McIntee, who is a long-time Eagan resident, accepted the award and credited his hard-of-hearing step-father with inspiring him and The UpTake’s volunteers to put in hundreds of hours of work to transcribe and caption the debates.

Here is what I found from their comments section: “I don’t believe he invented the telephone. He was either a founder or a secretary of Eugenic Society.? At that time, eugenicists believed Italians among others were inferior people. I believe he was embarrassed that an Italian man invented the telephone, so he had to steal his invention as he was a wealthy and powerful man. He was leading in repressing American Sign? Language and opposing Deaf to Deaf marriage. Today, AGB Assoc. is powerful and still active in oppressing us.”

Deaf Debate – What if there is NO ASL?

This video demonstrated what if there is no ASL or any other Sign Language – It has freaked me out a little when I realised the richness of our culture and history would not have existed! Should we maintained our culture and history for many years to come by having International Deaf Day? On which dates does your country celebrate Deaf Day….and what do you do?

Deaf Debate – Is that Discrimination?

Barb DiGi shares her disappointment about what really happened behind the scene during auditioning for the Helen Keller understudy role. She believes it is a lame excuse for not hiring a Deaf girl for the role since they claimed that they couldn’t find a qualified one which is completely hogwash. She saw it in her own eyes and knew the true story that it is not the case.
