Deaf Achievements – Oldest Sign Language Interpreter

Lillian Beard, sign language interpreter, addresses the opening ceremonies of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) conference in Philadelphia, August 1, 2009. Unfortunately Lillian died last month at the grand old age of 101. May she rest her soul and thank you for servicing the USA deaf community almost all your life!

Rest in Peace Lilian.

What a wonderful spirit and attitude Lilian had. Everyone can and should learn to communicate with fingerspelling, signlanguage, deaf/blind fingerspellling. The no matter who you meet you can communicate with them.

My work only started 15 years ago, but I pray that I can continue for many years to come.. encouraging and helping others of all ages to learn to communicate..
My Inspiration is Anne Sullivan, the teacher who helped Helen Keller to break through the silence with fingerspelling .I heard her story when I was a child and the seed was lanted in my heart to learn and then help others..

O my heart goes out to her parents who are deseased too but to her children ,if she had any? I am so soory to hear to lose her,can’t see to believe she was 100 years old, but guess I have to. She must have been a great interpreter too.
